1. INEC N1.5 Billion Website Hacked
The official website of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has been hacked.
MORE understands that the website which was reportedly built with N1.5 billion was attacked on Saturday morning, October 17, just a few hours after the website of the Central Bank of Nigeria became inaccessible.website of the Central Bank of Nigeria became inaccessible.
Though INEC at the moment is yet to explain what happened to the website, reports, however, claimed that the hacking was done by the Anonymous, a group of International hackers in its coordinated cyberattacks against the Nigerian government in support of #EndSARS.
2. CBN Release Important Update Over Alleged Hacked Website
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has debunked reports that its official website was been breached and shut down on Friday, October 16.
In a press release signed by Osita Nwanisobi, the Ag. Director, Corporate Communications of which copy was made available to newsmen said its website is secure, contrary to the news on social media news that the CBN, www.cbn.gov.ng has been hacked by Anonymous, an international group of hackers.
The CBN categorically stated in the letter dated October 16 that its website is safe and secure.
3. Coronavirus: NCDC Reports 212 New Cases Of COVID-19 In Nigeria
The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control, NCDC, has reported two hundred and twelve (212) confirmed new cases of Coronavirus pandemic in Nigeria.
The new cases were revealed in a post on the official Twitter account of the NCDC on Friday night, October 16, Naija News understands.
The newly reported cases bring the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria to 61,194 which includes 52,304 discharged cases and 1,119 deaths.
4. #EndSARS: We Are Sorry, We Feel Your Pains – VP Osinbajo Beg Nigerians Over Police Brutality
The Vice President of Nigeria, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, has appealed to all Nigerians over the pains brought to them by some officers of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, a controversial unit of the Nigeria Police Force.
The VP again condemned the unlawful and unprofessional activities of the SARS operatives, a development which brought about the ongoing nationwide protest.
Osinbajo in a series of tweets on his verified Twitter account on Friday, October 16, noted that he could feel the pains of many young persons who are directly or indirectly affected by the condemnable act of the disbanded unit of the police force. According to the VP, he understands that there were many people who have been assaulted by the police and that the act is unacceptable in all forms.
He, however, assured citizens that the government is concerned with their feelings and that they will take responsibility for protecting young people, even from those who are paid to protect them.
5. It’s Not Enough To #EndSARS, SARS Terrorists Must Face The Law – Imam Of Peace
A Muslim influencer and reformist Imam, Mohammad Tawhidi, popularly known as Imam of Peace, has maintained that #EndSARS is not enough but that officers of the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), must face the law.
MORE reports that protesting youths in Nigeria are agitating for the end to Police brutalization and extrajudicial killings of Nigerians. The protesters have been on the streets for more than a week now, protesting the brutalities, humiliation, and extortion of Nigerians, especially the youths.
The protesters demanded an end to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), a police unit under the Force Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department headed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police Anthony Ogbizi, using a hashtag: #EndSARS.
6. #EndSARS: Nigerians React As Police Attack Flavour, Phyno, Other Protesters In Anambra
Nigerians have taken to Twitter to react to the attacked launched on the #EndSARS protesters in Anambra by the police.
Recall MORE reported earlier that as protesters marched to the headquarters of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) in Awkuzu, Anambra, today, gunshots allegedly by policemen could be heard.
Led by Chinedu Okoli, highlife maestro better known as Flavour; Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, a rapper better known as Phyno, Kingsley Okonkwo, the singer better known as Kcee, were chanting “End SARS! End SARS!” as they moved the massive crowd of protesters.
It was learnt that the protesters converged in Awka, the state capital, from where they moved to the disbanded SARS office to demand that they shut down, the facility. However, they started to hear gunshots being fired by the police.
7. Police Service Commission To Dismiss 37 Ex-SARS Operatives, Prosecute 24 Others
37 former members of the disbanded Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) are set to dismissed from the Force by the Police Service Commission (PSC).
24 other former SARS operatives have also been pencilled down for prosecution over various acts of professional misconduct.
This development was confirmed in a statement by the spokesman of the commission, Ikechukwu Ani on Friday.
This follows the submission of a report to the PSC Chairman, Musiliu Smith, in Abuja on Friday by the Executive Secretary of the National Human Rights Commission, Tony Ojukwu. The report contained the highlights of the findings by the Presidential Panel on Reform of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad set up by the Federal Government in 2018.
8. #EndSARS: Nigerians Hold Candle Night For Victims Across States, See Videos
Nigerian youths including protesters tonight have taken to the streets to hold a candle night remembrance service for victims of police brutality in Nigeria.
Recall that for some time now, the protesters have taken to the streets in various states to agitate for an end to the activities of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), following the incessant deaths caused by them.
Reacting, the Inspector-general of police, Mohammed Adamu on Sunday, announced that he had dissolved the unit, and a few days after, announced the establishment of another unit to replace SARS, Special Weapons and Tactics Team.
Nigerians however, kicked against the idea, saying it was only a disguise and calling for an outright ban ever since.
9. #ENDSARS: Police Open Fire On Protesters In Anambra
As protesters marched to the headquarters of the special anti-robbery squad (SARS) in Awkuzu, Anambra, today, gunshots allegedly by policemen could be heard.
Led by Chinedu Okoli, highlife maestro better known as Flavour; Chibuzor Nelson Azubuike, a rapper better known as Phyno, Kingsley Okonkwo, the singer better known as Kcee, were chanting “End SARS! End SARS!” as they moved the massive crowd of protesters.
It was learnt that the protesters converged in Awka, the state capital, from where they moved to the disbanded SARS office to demand that they shut down, the facility.
The facility, situated at Akwuzu, and headed by one James Nwafor, has been accused of gross misconduct, arbitrary arrests, torture and extra-judicial killings.
10. #EndSARS: Falz, Joe Abah Withdraw From Virtual Town Hall Meeting
Multitalented Nigerian entertainer, Femi Falana, popularly known as Falz, has pulled out of a virtual meeting on Police brutality.
MORE reports that the Ministry of Youths and Sports had fixed a virtual town hall meeting for 3 pm on Friday to discuss police brutality following the nationwide call to #EndSARS.
The meeting with the theme “Protect Our Youths #EndPolice Brutality” was scheduled to have a conversation with 1. The Nigerian Youth 2. Minister of Youth Sport and Development 3. Inspector-General of Police 4. Human Rights Commission.
Panellists scheduled for the meeting were Mohammed Adamu, inspector- general of police (IGP); Segun Awosanya, human rights activist better known as Segalink, Falz and Joe Abah. Announcing his withdrawal earlier in the day, Falz said he was given false information on the event
